12-14 sessions of 3 hours each
3 components:
- Theory talking about how staff cannot follow written procedures and must adapt their work to match the conditions.
- Activity in which learners try to follow written procedures (which they won’t be able to do!) and they have to do a simple systems analysis and articulate their workarounds (the task may be clinical – eg hand hygiene, blood pressure measurement etc, or not – eg knitting, icing biscuits etc).
- Discussion of real-life examples of adaptations (eg corridor care, reduced ‘fresh eyes’ checks in maternity etc).

Year
Early Term 2
Leads & Contacts
Dr Helen Vosper
Description of Content
Learners work through the materials (which teach them how to identify microaggressions and provide strategies for tackling poor behaviours in the workplace). They are also taught that not standing up is likely to be related to systems factors that make them feel unsafe. They must write a 1000 word reflection on an incident that they have experienced and consider it through a systems lens. This helps them recognise environments where it is safe to speak up and when it isn’t.
